The Montréal Alliance announced Wednesday that it has signed Québec forward Mamadou Gueye for the 2023 season of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). Gueye has played two seasons in the CEBL with the Edmonton Stingers (2019), the Guelph Nighthawks (2021) and the Ottawa BlackJacks (2021). The small forward represented Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games as the team made it to the tournament’s final.
Gueye is currently completing the 2022-23 season with Defensor Sporting Club in the Uruguayan league and is averaging 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 27.7 minutes per game.
The Québec City native played two seasons in Japan with Yokohama (2021-22) and Gifu (2020-21). In 75 combined games over the two seasons, Gueye compiled averages of 19.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists. The 6-foot-7 forward also played with Halifax (2019-20) and Sudbury (2018-19) in the NBLC and with FC Schalke 04 (2018-19) in Germany’s Bundesliga.
In the CEBL, Gueye was selected second overall by the Edmonton Stingers in the 2019 draft. In 28 CEBL games, Gueye averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds.
Gueye played five collegiate seasons at the University of Alberta where he was named the team’s MVP in three consecutives seasons (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18). The small forward was also named the Canada West Rookie of the Year (2014) and ranks third in program history in total points (1516) and rebounds (657).
Gueye joins Alain Louis and Nathan Cayo as the third member of the team for the 2023 season. The Alliance plays its first of 10 home games at the Verdun Auditorium on May 26 against the Niagara River Lions. For more information or to buy season tickets, visit
