Alliance fall short in Scarborough

Jul 17, 2024

A game that was hardly ever in doubt for the Scarborough Shooting Stars ended with a resounding 91-71 victory over the Montréal Alliance on Tuesday night at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

The game marked the debut of Devontè Bandoo with the Alliance. Bandoo, who is returning from a significant injury, is expected to find his rhythm in the upcoming games, bringing a new dynamic to the team.

Despite the loss, Chris Smith continued to shine for the Alliance, delivering an impressive performance with 20 points, 10 rebounds, one steal and one block. This was Smith's second consecutive double-double and his sixth of the season. Smith has now scored 20 or more points in seven games this season, showcasing his consistency and importance to the team.

Ahmed Hill also bounced back after a concerning performance in his last game. He finished with 16 points, two rebounds, three assists and one steal. Hill notably hit back-to-back three-pointers, reaching the milestone of 200 made threes in his CEBL career. Only the second player to achieve this feat.

Head coach Derrick Alston Sr. described the game as "disappointing," highlighting the team's current struggles. "We're in a big-time funk. We're better than we're playing - well, I think we're better than we're showing on the court, but we haven't demonstrated that, so that's what happens," Alston Sr. said. "You play against a team at home that shoots the ball that well and you're hoping they miss instead of making them miss, we kind of got a little down on ourselves. So it kind of snowballed from there."

Despite the rough patch, the Alliance is building towards Championship Weekend and has the assets needed to succeed. Bandoo, coming back from his injury, will find his rhythm in the coming games. The newest additions, Christian Rohlehr, Negus Webster-Chan, and Curtis Hollis, are also expected to acclimate and contribute to the team's efforts.

The Alliance is set to return to the court on Friday in Calgary against the Surge, aiming to turn things around and get back on the winning track.
